August feels like a natural time to reflect on what wellness means to us here at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary.
First, let’s look at what wellness is usually associated with. Treatments, spa, yoga, detox, exercise, meditation, healthy food… We believe that wellness is about something simple: having the time and space to listen to yourself and understand what you need.
Life outside the Sanctuary is often carefully structured around schedules. There are meetings to attend, appointments to keep, and responsibilities waiting at the end of the day. Even when we travel, it can be tempting to fill our days with plans, making sure that we see and experience as much as possible. At the Sanctuary, we approach things diferently. We believe that time dedicated to rest and wellbeing should feel restorative, rather than becoming another schedule to follow.
We don’t have a daily schedule for in-house experiences or a fixed time table for wellness treatments and yoga. Instead, our wellness program is deliberately flexible and adaptable to each guest. Your day can unfold according to how you feel, rather than according to a schedule prepared in advance. You might wake up feeling ready for a morning yoga session, spend some time walking through our gardens and reading on your balcony, and decide later in the day that you would like a hot stone bath. Another day, you may feel that what you really need is a slow morning, a good breakfast and some quiet time before doing anything else.
There is no expectation that every day should look the same.Â
Our wellness team is there to guide and support you throughout your stay, taking into consideration how you are feeling and what you would like to focus on. Treatments and activities can therefore become part of a natural rhythm. We find that this gives guests the freedom to become more aware of their own needs, which can be surprisingly difficult when life is normally governed by the clock.
There is also something very valuable in leaving a little space for the unexpected. You might find out that you enjoy sitting quietly in the garden longer than you had planned, or that after a day exploring the valley you would rather return to the Sanctuary and rest than continue with another activity.
Perhaps you find yourself drawn to meditation one morning when you had not planned to do so at all, or have a longer conversation with somebody without needing to interrupt it to rush to the wellness rooms. These small choices may seem insignificant, but having the freedom to make them can be an important part of learning to slow down.
This philosophy reflects our broader understanding of wellness. We find that wellness is the process of finding greater balance between the body, mind, and spirit. Sometimes that means movement and activity; at other times, it means stillness.
Sometimes you may want to challenge yourself, while on another day your body may simply be asking for rest. Both are equally valuable.
In this sense, flexibility is an important part of the experience at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary. We want our guests to feel that their time belongs to them, without the pressure of having to be somewhere at a particular hour just because it has been planned in advance. There is a certain freedom in waking up and asking yourself what would feel most beneficial today, instead of immediately looking at a timetable.
This is one of the less evident, but equally important, parts of a wellness retreat: not having to fill every moment. Surrounded by the peaceful valley landscapes of Bhutan, you can let your days take their own shape.
