Stories
Our Founder
Louk Lennaerts, the founder of the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary, visited Bhutan for the first time in 2013. At that time, Bhutan was an unknown and somehow mysterious destination for him. During his visit, he became fascinated by the unique country and its possibilities and felt it would be the perfect place to build something different and new: a Sanctuary in the land of wellness.

The Neyphu Valley
With special thanks to Mr. Rinzin Namgay for sharing this story about the Neyphu Valley, home to the Sanctuary
In the former days, when Bhutan was not yet connected with India by road, people had to travel a long way by foot to trade their goods for products such as sugar, salt, and tobacco. These journeys could take weeks and were not without danger. Fatigue in combination with unexpected landslides, forest fires, and ongoing monsoon rains made for challenging traveling.
Mission & Vision
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The Restful Mind philosophy, based on the teachings of His Eminence Gyalwa Dokhampa, is infused in the daily life at the Sanctuary. We think and act consciously, in our daily work and interactions, with each other and our guests. We realize we all are part of, and responsible for, the well-being of all that and those who surround us.
What Others Say
Honeymoon Trip
June 2025
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary during our honeymoon in Bhutan earlier this year. It is a magnificent property with beautiful views and spacious rooms. We were immediately mesmerized by the architecture upon arriving and how peaceful the atmosphere was.
The manager is very attentive and makes sure you have everything that you need. They offer a large variety of teas and I made sure to try a new one each meal. There are also a bunch of amenities and activities that are included with your stay, including a hot stone herbal bath, massages, sound healing, a consultation with a doctor trained in traditional Bhutanese medicine, and more. We would have loved to do the Bhutanese cooking class here if we had more time.
At the beginning of your stay when you first check in, they take a photo of you and print it on real Bhutan stamps that they gift to you when you check out. This was such a sweet and personal touch. Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary was the final hotel of our honeymoon trip and we could not have asked for a better place to end it.
Home away from home
June 2025
This felt like a home away from home…the rooms are luxurious, spacious and zen. We didn’t want to leave the hotel, we just wanted to relax in the room, linger over the special teas, and recharge in the spa. The very caring service, and the MANY thoughtful touches throughout our stay really do make this a sanctuary, and one of my favorite hotels to date. I can’t recommend it enough, as it’s really a standout experience in a sea of options.
Five star accommodation and food
May 2025
The Bhutan Spirit Sanctaury is not really a resort. It is, first and foremost, an uber luxury spa, supported by five star accommodation and food.
The spa facilities and service were outstanding. Our room was bright, spacious, with a to die for view. The bathroom setup with two separate sinks was great, as was the privacy afforded by the separate shower and lavatory enclosures. By the way, the spa offers the services of a traditional Bhutanese medicine practitioner, and he got our diagnoses spot on!
Lovely experience
May 2025
What a lovely experience from the moment we walked through the door. It is a wonderful all inclusive resort. Once you are there you are captivated by the beautiful serene setting both inside and out. The services are extensive and included in the package making the stay exceptional. The spa offerings, pool and gym are lovely. The staff is outstanding, very welcoming and always has a smile.
